Wood Fence Maintenance Guide for Ontario

Ontario's climate is tough on wood fences. With proper care, your fence can last 20+ years. Neglect it, and you'll be replacing it in under 10. Here's how to protect your investment.

Annual Maintenance Checklist

Spring (April-May):

  • [ ] Inspect for winter damage
  • [ ] Check posts for stability
  • [ ] Look for rot, especially near ground level
  • [ ] Clean off debris and dirt
  • [ ] Check gate hardware

Fall (September-October):

  • [ ] Clear vegetation from fence line
  • [ ] Ensure proper drainage away from posts
  • [ ] Make any repairs before winter
  • [ ] Apply touch-up stain if needed

Cleaning Your Wood Fence

Materials needed:

  • Garden hose with spray nozzle
  • Soft brush or broom
  • Fence cleaner (or DIY solution)

DIY cleaning solution:

  • 1 gallon water
  • 1 cup oxygen bleach
  • 1/4 cup dish soap

Steps:

1. Remove loose debris with brush

2. Apply cleaner, let sit 10-15 minutes

3. Scrub with soft brush

4. Rinse thoroughly with hose

5. Let dry completely before staining

Staining and Sealing

When to stain:

  • New fence: After 2-3 months (let wood dry)
  • Existing fence: Every 2-4 years
  • Test: If water soaks in instead of beading, it's time

Staining tips:

  • Choose a dry week (no rain for 48 hours)
  • Apply in shade or overcast conditions
  • Use quality exterior wood stain
  • Apply evenly with brush, roller, or sprayer
  • Don't skip the end grain and post tops

Common Problems and Solutions

Warped boards:

Replace individual boards rather than whole panels.

Loose posts:

May need re-setting with new concrete.

Mold/mildew:

Clean with appropriate cleaner and improve sun exposure.

Insect damage:

Treat affected areas; may need board replacement.
