Choosing a Fence That Survives Windsor Weather

Windsor's climate presents unique challenges for fencing materials. Hot, humid summers, cold winters, and freeze-thaw cycles can damage the wrong materials quickly.

Windsor's Climate Challenges

  • Summer heat and humidity: Up to 35°C with high humidity
  • Winter cold: Down to -20°C or colder
  • Freeze-thaw cycles: Major cause of fence damage
  • Lake effect moisture: Extra precipitation from Lake Erie/St. Clair

Best Materials for Our Climate

1. Pressure-Treated Wood (Excellent)

  • Chemically protected against rot and insects
  • Handles temperature extremes well
  • Affordable and widely available
  • Naturally weathers to silver-grey patina
  • Excellent durability

3. Vinyl/PVC (Excellent)

  • Impervious to moisture
  • Won't crack, rot, or peel
  • Zero maintenance required
  • Some cheap vinyl can become brittle in extreme cold

4. Aluminum (Excellent)

  • Won't rust or corrode
  • Unaffected by temperature changes
  • Virtually maintenance-free
  • Best for ornamental and pool fencing

Materials to Avoid or Use Carefully

Untreated Wood: Will rot within a few years without treatment.Iron/Steel (without proper coating): Rust is inevitable in our humid climate.Cheap Imported Vinyl: May crack in extreme cold.

Our Recommendation

For privacy fencing, we install premium pressure-treated wood fences, or vinyl for maintenance-free performance. Both handle Windsor's climate exceptionally well when properly installed with deep post footings below the frost line.
